We are operating under the traditional view that the author of Revelation is John the Apostle. There are three proposed Johns, including the Apostle John, John the Elder, and another unknown John. These proposals are based on the different language used between this book and the Gospel of John.
The Book of Revelation is unique. It has the qualities of an epistle as letters are written to the seven churches. It also is prophetic as it prophesies of things to come. It is an apocalypse which is its own category of writing. It contains the previous elements as well as includes symbolism, revealed mysteries, and spiritual experiences of the writer.
