![[20240501-RevelationHeader.jpg]] ![[The Beast From The Sea 13.1-10#^143f5d]] We understand that John stood on the sand of the sea and saw a beast rising up with seven heads and ten horns crowned upon them. The beast's appearance combined characteristics from multiple animals: like a leopard, bear feet, and lion mouth. The dragon gave this beast his power, throne, and great authority. ***What does the sea represent?*** Some have noted that in biblical symbolism, the sea represents chaos, masses of people, or nations. So we understand that this beast emerges from "the nations," out of the chaotic realm where multiple kingdoms and systems arise ([[Revelation 7.1-3|Revelation 7:1-3]]). The ten horns likely represent kings—ten authorities ruling over the beast's systems—and seven heads suggest seven kingdoms, governments, or structures operating under one overarching power ([[Daniel 7.24|Daniel 7:24]]). ***What is blasphemous about this name and the blasphemies that the beast speaks?*** A blasphemous name appears on the beast's heads. Blasphemy is defined as violation of God's power and majesty. This word can be understood as mocking or speaking against God, His tabernacle, those dwelling in heaven, Moses, and angels—essentially with the blasphemer elevating themselves to positions where they have no right. The blasphemy includes persecuting Christians and doubting Jesus's claims (cf. [[Matthew 9.3-6|Matthew 9:3-6]]). ***What happens when one head appears wounded?*** One of the beast's heads appeared as if mortally wounded—deadly, with no recovery. Yet the fatal wound was healed, and all the world marveled and followed the beast. Some have noted this mirrors Jesus's resurrection; it looks like a joke—a parody of death itself. The whole earth gaped at the beast as if drawn to its power, marveling at this "miracle" and giving allegiance. ***Does Satan have the power to resurrect?*** Only God has breath of life, yet Satan was granted this power to do so. So the devil receives permission from God to act. The wound being healed isn't his own doing—it's granted authority ([[Revelation 13.5|v5]]). ***What does the dragon do when this resurrection occurs?*** Verse 4 says the world worships both the dragon who gave authority to the beast and the beast itself. This double worship mirrors God's own pattern. The dragon (Satan) wants to be like God; the beast mimics Christ's death and resurrection. So we could understand this as anti-God, anti-Father, anti-Son, even anti-Spirit—all in reverse. ***What is implied with the question, “Who is able to make war with him?”*** The world asks: "who is like the beast, who is able to make war with him?" Some felt they'd be empowered; others felt defeated. Either way, the question reveals fear mixed with awe. ***Were the people forced into this worship?*** Verse 4 says no—they chose to worship the dragon and beast. They exercised their will. ***Could they have chosen to repent?*** Yes. ***Did they choose to repent?*** No. Each person's sovereign choice determines whether they follow Christ or the Antichrist spirit (cf. [[2 Thessalonians 2.8-10|2 Thessalonians 2:8-10]]). ***Are there things that people today practice that are similar to what worshiping the beast?*** We see now things like deception, pleasure in unrighteousness, loving darkness more than light ([[John 3.19-20|John 3:19-20]]). Antichrists have come—people who pretended to be Christians but weren't ([[1 John 2.18-23|1 John 2:18-23]]). They love their evil deeds, keep practicing them, don't come to the light lest they're exposed ([[John 3.20|John 3:20]]). ***What is the Holy Spirit's role?*** The Apostle Paul said the one who now restrains will be taken out of the way before the lawless one is revealed ([[2 Thessalonians 2.6-8|2 Thessalonians 2:6-8]]). Some have noted this could mean when the Holy Spirit departs from earth (the church), the lawless one is released. We understand that evil can operate freely only when God's restraint is removed. > [!todo]- For Further Study: The Antichrist Spirit in Action > Explore how the Antichrist spirit works through deception and pleasure in sin. ***What does it mean to follow the truth vs. the lie?*** Here are some passages to get you started: [[Revelation 2.14-15|Revelation 2:14-15]], [[Revelation 2.20-23|Revelation 2:20-23]], [[1 John 4.1-6|1 John 4:1-6]]. ***What are some traps we can fall into?*** We need to watch for deception in culture, entertainment, and pleasure. We need to block out the noise by knowing and practicing the truth ([[John 8.32|John 8:32]]). ***If we depart from the Holy Spirit's leading, what evil would follow us?*** The consequences are already set before us ([[1 Corinthians 6.9-10|1 Corinthians 6:9-10]]). ***What time period does the dragon have authority over?*** The beast speaks blasphemies for forty-two months—time, times, and half a time ([[Daniel 7.25|Daniel 7:25]]). This falls within the tribulation period when the church is gone from earth. --- [[Studies]] | [[Revelation]] | [[Revelation Chapter 12]] | [[Revelation Chapter 14]]
